New, Bigger Proposal for 500 Sheppard Ave. East

A new applicant at this site is proposing a much larger project than what was previously negotiated between the City and the applicant as a settlement of an appeal at the Ontario Municipal Board. The previous approval was for a 25-storey residential tower and a 9-storey office building. As an indication of how emboldened developers are by changes made by the provincial government in 2019, a new applicant is asking for two buildings of 39 and 34 storeys on top of a 4-9-storey podium.

The proposed development would contain 928 residential units. It is likely that this development will be appealed to the Ontario Land Tribunal, the provincially-appointed body which has the final say over all controversial development proposals which frequently ignores the wishes of your elected City Council or the views of the community or of the City's professional Planning staff .

If you'd like more information on this proposal, or to comment, you are invited to attend a June 6 community consultation meeting, starting at 7 p.m.

To join, visit the City of Toronto's community planning consultation website here: 500sheppardavee

For more information on the development at 500 Sheppard Avenue East, visit the website Development Applications (toronto.ca).

For more information on the site, visit Toronto.ca/6167YongeSt

North York Turns 100 June 13

On Monday June 13, North York turns 100 years old, and we’ll be gathering to celebrate with the North York Historical Society and the North York Central Library at the North York Centre Mall.

The library will be showcasing a display of photographs highlighting the changes that North York has undergone from its beginnings as a collection of small rural communities to its life as a city and now a part of amalgamated Toronto.

John will be on hand at the event at 1 p.m., along with North York Historical Society representatives, North York Councillors Shelley Carroll and James Pasternak, and Toronto Mayor John Tory. The hour-long ceremony will be in celebration of the day the Township of North York was born, with the passage of a provincial bill that separated North York from the Township of York.

The photography display will include pictures going back well before North York’s inception – including one, from 1898, of Yonge Street looking north near Ellerslie Avenue, another with a view of Yonge and Sheppard circa 1911, and one from 1914, looking north from Park Home on Yonge.

The photos will be on display at the west end of the mall just outside the North York Central Library, at 5150 Yonge Street.
